Ethiopian History

Ethiopia is one of the ancient nation in the history of civilization. The country has long history (3 millennia) and hence it has many historical attractions such as rock hewn churchs of Lalibela and the most popular monolithic and cave churchs at Axum. This area, which is found on the northern tip of the country, was the center of civilization in the ancient times and where king Ezana introduce Christianity to Ethiopia in the fourth century.

Gondar was the capital city of Ethiopia for more than 300 years in the medieval period of history and 17 century. Gondar was founded by Emperor Fasiledes at a most challenging time of civil war.

The civil war was between Gragi Mehammed, left handed man war helped by Ottoman Turky, and the christian kingdom who was helped by the Portugal who asked in return to convert the Ethiopian church to Catholic. This brought a great civil war between the royal family and the people against the imported faith.
The civil war returned in the Zemene Mesafnt that was endedd with the restoration of Ethiopia.

In general the history of Ethiopia is divided into three parts: ancient - medieval - modern (starting from the early unification of the country i.e. 1855)
