Ethiopia is one of the ancient nations in the history of
civilization. The country has long history (3 millennia) and hence many
historical attractions such as rock hewn churches of Lalibela and the most
popular monolithic and cave churches at Axum. This area, which is found on the
northern tip of the country, was the center of civilization in the ancient
times and where king Ezana introduce Christianity to Ethiopia in the fourth
century.
In general the history of Ethiopia is divided into three parts: ancient -
medieval - modern (starting from the early unification of the country i.e.
1855)
Gondar was the capital city of Ethiopia for more than 300 years during
the medieval period until the 17th century. It was founded by Emperor Fasiledes
at a most challenging time of the civil war,
The civil war was between Gragi Mehammed, helped by Ottoman Turkey,
and the Christian kingdom who was helped by Portugal who asked in return to
convert the Ethiopian church to Catholic. This brought a great civil war
between the royal family and the people against the imported faith.
The civil war ended with the restoration of Ethiopia.
